On March 5, the Beijing Overseas Talents Center hosted the event in the theme of "Experiencing Wing Chun, Displaying Women Power" at the International Cultural Exchange Center for Wing Chun Martial Arts, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. Representatives of foreign talents and their families from 10 countries, including the UK, the US, Japan, and Singapore, gathered together. Among them were female scientists, entrepreneurs, and outstanding female representatives who received the Chinese Government Friendship Award and the Beijing Great Wall Friendship Award. By experiencing Wing Chun, they all felt the unique charm of Chinese culture, promoted cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, and demonstrated the power of women.
At the beginning of the event, professional instructors gave a detailed introduction to the historical origins and cultural connotations of Wing Chun. As a treasure of traditional Chinese martial arts, Wing Chun was founded by the Buddhist nun Ng Wi and later passed on to Yim Wing-chun. Its techniques, characterized by using softness to overcome hardness and integrating attack and defense, fully reflect the wisdom and creativity of women in the field of martial arts. In 2014, Wing Chun was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list, becoming an important symbol of Chinese culture. Foreign talents and their families expressed that the elegance and strength of Wing Chun enriched their understanding of Chinese martial arts culture and allowed them to feel the profoundness and unique charm of Chinese culture.
In the subsequent teaching and experience session, under the guidance of professional instructors, foreign talents and their families learned the basic skill "Sil Lum Tao" and the core training method "108 Wooden Dummy Forms" of Wing Chun. "Sil Lum Tao" emphasizes "punches start from the heart and power comes from the knees," helping practitioners to experience the essence of martial arts that integrates internal and external cultivation. The "108 Wooden Dummy Forms," on the other hand, simulate combat scenarios to train participants' limb strength and coordination. Tang Jie, a professor at Beijing University of Technology and a member of the Japanese Engineering Academy, said, "Exercise brings a sense of physical and mental well-being, and I truly enjoy the process. I've also made many friends and was pleasantly surprised to find that we live quite close to each other. I'm grateful to the Beijing Overseas Talents Center for providing this platform for communication and interaction." Rebeca Siuney Phang Rivera, a Spanish-language expert at the China Internet Information Center of the China International Communications Group, said, "I'm curious about everything related to Chinese culture. It was fantastic, and I was delighted to learn that the founder of Wing Chun was a woman. From Wing Chun, I've felt a unique combination of strength and beauty."
During the tea-tasting and communication session, foreign talents engaged in in-depth discussions and shared their thoughts in a pleasant atmosphere while enjoying delicious food and appreciating the art of tea. Roberta Lipson, Honorary Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and founder of United Family Healthcare, shared her experience: "The theme of this event is closely related to women. Women have different body structures from men, and it's interesting to learn a martial art specifically designed for women. I've lived in Beijing for 45 years and truly enjoy the livable environment here. Besides my hometown, Beijing is my favorite city."
